ABOUT MY ARTWORK
TOOLS AND MATERIALS
I use a special iron that has been developed for encaustic painting. It has a flat base (no holes) and is a similar size to a travel iron. The main differance is the thermostat as it stays constant. There is no cooling down during use, unlike a normal iron.
The iron gives unusual results and can give the artist challenges when unexpected things happen. This is all part of the fun of painting with an iron and beeswax.
Stylus, paint brushes, pallete knives, tissues, sponges, hot air guns, hairdryers and hotplates and almost anything else I can find is used in my work.
The stylus is a bit like a soldering iron but is regulated so it doesn't get too hot. It also comes with special attachments and is used as a drawing tool as it holds wax like a pen holds ink. Great for more detailed and delicate work.
The hotplate is used for larger work and for keeping brushes warm and wax molten.
THE PAINTINGS
My paintings on this website are all orginals. They are created using purified beeswax that has light fast colours added to it.
The paintings on glossy card, or watercolour paper are mounted in good quality mounts, either black or cream in colour. I find these colours best suit my paintings. The mounts are all standard frame sizes so customers can easily buy a frame of their choice at any retail outlet that sells ready made frames.
I prefer not to frame my paintings for customers as the frames are easily damaged and it would be expensive for me to stock the variety of frames to suit different tastes. It also would cost more for postage, however I do have some framed paintings to sell at my studio and of course in any exhibitions my paintings will be mostly framed for protection.
Frames and mounts are not normally required for my canvas paintings, they are ready to hang. I will state next to the painting if a frame is required.
CARE OF WAX PAINTINGS
People often ask if their paintings will melt. Wax melts at over 60 degrees centigrade so if your painting is melting you will have a bigger problem........your house is on fire. However of course it is something to be aware of. Treat your painting with respect as you would any other artwork for example out of direct sunlight especially if it is in a frame with glass. Wax paintings stand the test of time. The British Museum has wax paintings over 2000 years old and they still look pretty good.
